The Underworld
Cecil Sharp House is one of the most legendary venues in London. Built in 1929 as the headquarters of the English Folk Dance Society, it was named after its co-founder, Cecil Sharp. Think of Sharp as kind of a folk rock n roll ruffian.

The first song he ever found, “Seeds of Love“, was shared by friend and gardener, John England. And after that moment of whimsy, they decided to go on a song finding mission together, riding from village to village on his bicycle, collecting songs … He collected around 5000 altogether.

Without this teacher-cum-folk-fanatic’s tireless efforts, they could have been lost completely. Without him, we might not have Morris dancing, which I think we can all agree, would have been a huge loss. He also saved one of the best songs ever written, “The water is wide”.
As everyone left the fields and headed to work in the factories, the word of mouth traditions were fading. Without these roots of our past being saved, Mumford and Sons might not even exist. Nor Laura Marling. Nor Simon and Garfunkel.

Meet Lockdown Co. – The hard-hitting rock trio, born from the chaos of 2020<< Get tickets here >> Meet Lockdown Co., one of our favourite bands playing on our next show on Thursday 21/09 at Dublin Castle! Born from the chaos of 2020 comes Lockdown Co. A hard-hitting rock trio made up of drummer Doug Rimington (Heart Through Sacrifice), guitarist Lloyd Meeks and vocalist Leah Bell-Miller. Rewind back to the COVID-19 lockdowns, former media colleagues Doug and Lloyd started remotely working on new musical ideas. The duo experiment continuously over the first 18 months, eventually releasing a string of instrumental singles throughout 2021. Whilst remote creativity and production had a huge influence on how the band started (hence the name), they eventually entered live rehearsals at Gunfactory Studios in Homerton. 2022 also saw Lockdown Co. partner up with Camden Live to record numerous livestreams, and hit the stage for the first time at the historic Fiddlers Elbow. They also released their first instrumental EP, End of Chapter, an eclectic mix of hard rock, grunge, prog, blues and metal. The next chapter for the band saw the addition of vocalist Leah, signifying an evolution of their material with lyrics. The new trio re-entered the studio in 2023 to record an entirely self-produced EP entitled Into Oblivion. Take Me Down was the first single released with Leah in July, with the full EP released in August. Lockdown Co. will also return to the stage later in 2023, and if you need an idea of what to expect: “I don’t know whether it sounded good, but it was fucking loud!” – Gunfactory Studios Meet Lockdown Co. during our interview! Lloyd’s personal answers but some also reflective of the band! 1) How did you get into music? Within LockdownCo. it’s a mixture of family influences, sibling rivalry and natural paths of exploring our different artistic urges. I started learning guitar from the age of 9 to try and do something that was different (I personally don’t come from a family of musicians) and carried on studying music in education until I completed a Masters in 2012, as a way to push and prove myself. For me, it’s not just a creative outlet, it’s something that has always given me something to work towards, build and achieve. 2) What bands inspired your style and how do you differ to your roots? It’s cliche to say but we really do take inspiration from lots of places, from roots blues all the way through to thrash metal. When we started, we wanted to try and emulate the grunge, hard rock and blues driven rock from bands such as Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and Clutch, but having performed as an instrumental duo for a couple of years, we evolved to take inspiration from more progressive instrumental bands such as Totemist and Tides From Nebula. Having Leah come on board in the past year, it’s really elevated us to a more unique style as we’ve found a way to merge these different influences, and we don’t feel bound by trying to stick to one particular genre. 3) What would you say thrills your soul? Creating something new! Nothing beats the feeling of expressing yourself through music, whether it’s on stage or in the studio. Whatever we ‘create’, whether it’s a video, EP or live performance, as long as we do ourselves justice that’s what drives us. 4) If you were to get stuck on a lonely island, which would be the three albums you’ll take with you? Chris from killing aura and I’m going to be answering some questions for you. 1. How did you get into music? So, I started playing guitar and singing when I was 2,3, and I’ve just always been obsessed, it was instant for me and I’ve just always lived for it. 2. What bands inspired your style and how do you differ to your roots? Well for me, I’ve always liked the Kinks, the Beatles, Oasis, Guns n Roses, T rex, many different bands from different genres. We’ve just taken a little bit of inspiration from them all, but our music does sound different, we’ve got a different twist to it. 3. What would you say thrills your soul? So for me, doing live concerts. I live for doing gigs, I just think it’s the best feeling you can get. 4. If you were to get stuck on a lonely island, which would be the three albums you’ll take with you? For me it would be ‘Appetite for destruction’ by Guns n Roses, ‘Aladdin Sane’ by David Bowie, and ‘Revolver’ by the Beatles. 5. Beatles Vs Stones? Absolutely the Beatles, but I do love the Stones as well. 6. Do you believe in aliens? ´Yes I do, the universe is too big, you never know. Meet ClamberClamber ‘s unique blend of ‘armchair pop’ provides nods towards their early folk influences and love of indie pop, marrying lyrical vulnerability with a pared back, atmospheric tone to create a captivating and forward-thinking take on indie pop. Check them out on Instagram Meet Clamber during our interview! 1) How did you get into music? I didn’t really have a choice! My parents were playing albums in the house every second of my life. I have really vivid memories of Belle and Sebastian’s ‘If You’re Feeling Sinister’ and David Gray’s ‘White Ladder’ from when I was crawling about, as well as my Mum’s living room dance moves. There’s also a fantastic (or embarrassing, you choose the word) video of me singing Champagne Supernova at about 5 years old, swaggering round the mic like Liam Gallagher – you can find it on my Insta! 2) What bands inspired your style and how do you differ to your roots? I grew up as an acoustic guitar player, which had a massive impact on my playing and songwriting style. I started by learning strum-and-finger-picking styles from the likes of Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Daughter, Lewis Watson, Mumford and Sons, Newton Faulkner and Ben Howard, which also opened me up to open tunings and the world of folk pop. Much of my early songwriting took a similar form to those artists, but now I’m hooked on guitar pop and catchy choruses, akin to The 1975, Boygenius, The Beths, Darwin Deez and Will Joseph Cook. I still write all my ideas on acoustic guitar first, which has given us this unique blend of sounds that we have now, that we have branded armchair pop! We’ve also recently incorporated synth, and this defo comes from my love of AURORA. 3) What would you say thrills your soul? Brentford playing in the premier league every week, and last minute weekend trips to new cities. 4) If you were to get stuck on a lonely Island, which would be the 3 albums you’ll take with you? I’ve gone for 4 (SORRY)!! 1. Aurora – A Different Kind of Human 2. Sivu – Something on High 3. Freelance Whales – Weathervanes 4.
