Black Flag Are Flying High

Punk icons Black Flag will excoriate you with their raw rage. If punk could be dead, then this is the afterlife. Black Flag kick off their first UK tour in over 35 years this Monday, the 7th of October, at the Electric Ballroom in a sold out show. The rest of their week-long UK tour has stop-offs in Birmingham, Norwich, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester. The take-no-shit DIY vegans from Hermosa Beach, California, are back together, and we need ’em in these times – when all anyone wants to do is ameliorate the reality of elitist fuckery.

Taking the mic, as he did quite literally from former singer Ron Reyes during the 2013 Australia tour, is Mike Vallely. Vallely, or Mike V, is the owner of quite a riveting ‘slash career’; skater / musician / actor / TV personality / stuntman / hockey player / lead singer of Black Flag.

Expect rabble-rousing anti-authoritarian lyrics, screeching guitars driven into pummelling, crashing riffs and hooks, oh, and lots and lots of pogo-ing down front. The band have reportedly been working on new material – but I’ve seen glimpses of their 2019 sets online and it still features catalogue tracks of brute force punk rock.

If you’re taking time out from the (Extinction) Rebellion on the 7th, and want more visceral, controversial inspiration, the soundtrack might as well be Black Flag. So if you’ve got a six-pack, and nothing to do
