Things involving arks usually come in twos, and Alessi Laurent Mark’s is no exception: her sound has light and shade; grit and tranquility; the distorted and the natural. To illustrate this point, check out the grungy ‘Must Have Grown’ with brash defiant vocal style perhaps inspired by her time supporting Sharon Van Etten. Then, contrast this with the swelling harp and xylophone chimes on the softly autumnal ‘Constellations.’

Think brush stroke nimble drumming painted over the watercolour canvas of sumptuous string arrangements, with lots of space for Alessi’s vocals to really glide. She has a great idiosyncratic vocal style, at times vibrato with unusual inflections like 90s alt-rock lovers Soccer Mommy or Snail Mail, at other times soft and lilting like Laura Marling.

This is a voice that has travelled and had adventures and developed into something knowing, tasteful and triumphant. Alessi’s Ark pay us a visit on March 20th.
