What’s on in Camden this week?!

OUR CMDN PICKS FOR YOU

Discover the best live music in Camden this week,

between 1st and 13th of October 🙂

SUNDAY 1st

  • at the Jazz Cafe / VIBRANT BRAZILIAN SOUL ORIGINATOR – THE UNIVERSE OF TIM MAIA

We’re bringing back our massive tribute to the legendary Brazilian musician. The 10-piece band will perform favourites like O Caminho do Bem, Que Beleza, and E Necessario, as well as the finest of his back catalogue from an extraordinary run of record releases in the 1970s and 1980s. Building his confidence in playing various instruments, like the flute, vocals, drums and guitar during his early teens. Maia first dabbled in group bands before taking the ultimate risk on his solo career. His voice sparked a revolution in Brazilian mainstream culture that went well beyond music, particularly the rise of the Black Rio movement. In his bassy and march-like tone, he expresses his desire to give the black people in Brazil a voice. Spoken highly of by all the soul greats from James Brown to Stevie Wonder, during the late 20th century, he was of influence not only on the sounds of soul around Brazil but around the world.

  • Graham Parker & The Goldtops plus support Connor Selby at Dingwalls

Graham Parker returns to the UK for 6 exclusive dates with backing band The Goldtops, expect a night of classic Parker songs alongside some newer material. Stereotyped early in his career as the quintessential angry young man, Graham Parker was one of the most celebrated singer/songwriters to emerge from England’s pub rock scene in the early ’70s. Drawing heavily from Van Morrison and the Rolling Stones, Parker developed a sinewy fusion of driving rock & roll and confessional folk-rock, highlighted by his indignant passion, biting sarcasm, and bristling anger. At the outset of his career, his albums crackled with pub rock energy, snide witticisms, and perceptive insights, earning him a devoted following of fans and critics, who lavished praise on his debut, 1976’s Howlin’ Wind, recorded with the Rumour, his backing band of pub rock all-stars. After delivering Squeezing Out Sparks in 1979, which was a smash with critics and won him a larger audience in the United States, Parker courted a crossover career with solo projects such as 1982’s Another Grey Area and 1985’s Steady Nerves before settling into a cult following in the late ’80s and continuing to garner critical acclaim as his music mellowed but his lyrical perspective stayed sharp. At the behest of filmmaker Judd Apatow, Parker reunited with the Rumour for his movie This Is 40, which led to concert tours and a pair of albums, 2012’s Three Chords Good and 2015’s Mystery Glue. Fast forward to 2023 and Graham returns to the UK to play 6 exclusive dates with his most recent backing band The Goldtops. Expect a night of classic Parker songs alongside some newer material. Connor Selby – Selected to appear at Wembley Stadium supporting The Who, Kaiser Chiefs, Imelda May and Eddie Vedder in July 2019, Connor Selby is a rising star.
Having already played a number of iconic venues such as the 100 Club and Borderline, and having clocked up numerous festival appearances, the young British bandleader-guitarist-vocalist writes his own songs and builds on influences as diverse as Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, and Nick Drake. With his soulful vocal style and his distinctive guitar playing that evokes the British blues boom of the 1960’s, Connor has consistently captivated audiences and is making a name for himself.

MONDAY 2nd

  • at the Jazz Cafe / TERRY REID
“There are only three things happening in England. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Terry Reid.” – Aretha Franklin (1968)Terry Reid is widely regarded as one of the greatest vocalists this country has ever produced. His concerts should be a cherished memory for any rock n’ roll fan. Since first touring with The Rolling Stones from the age of 15 Reid has had quite a career, also supporting tours with Cream, The Beatles and Fleetwood Mac. He famously turned down the front man’s place with Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, and instead went on to produce several solo albums of outstanding quality. There’s been a huge resurgence of interest in his music following recent reissues, including in the creative goldmine of albums from the 70s like River and Seed of Memory, where you’ll find the progressive funky folk blues sound that defines him best.

New single Wexford online everywhere now. Theyre revitalising Irish trad for a new generation with rowdy reinterpretations of hand-me-down odes to sex, devilry and drink (mainly drink). Like the Dubliners, the Pogues and Jinx Lennon before them, they elevate the displaced and the downtrodden, sticking two fingers up to the establishment and, in doing so, yanking a thread that unites all rebel music from folk to punk and rap” The Guardian

WEDNESDAY 4th

  • at Dublin Castle / Black Pantera + Black Rooster
Black Pantera is a metal/punk power trio created in 2014 by brothers Charles (vocals, guitar) and Chaene Gama (bass, backing vocals), later joined by Rodrigo “Pancho” Augusto (drums). Its name was inspired by the Black Panthers, the famous political organization founded in the US to fight police brutality against the black community. Even in the racially mixed reality of Brazil, it’s unusual to see black artists playing heavy metal. Culturally, they are usually associated with samba, reggae, and rap. Black Pantera challenges this idea completely. Their new album, “Ascensão” (Ascension), is a devastating and powerful follow-up to their well-reviewed previous releases, “Project Black Pantera” (2015) and “Agressão” (Aggression, 2018). The band’s natural growth is due to producer Rafael Ramos, an experienced and excited young visionary famous for bringing new ideas to a wide variety of legendary Brazilian artists, from jazz icons Joao Donato and Elza Soares to late indie gods such as Los Hermanos and Pitty.

  • Pianos  became the teeth / at LaFayette
With Support Sugar Horse + itoldyouiwouldeatyou – The opening couplet on Pianos Become The Teeth’s fifth full-length album Drift is as captivating as it is haunting, a statement which can also be said of the album as a whole. “For me, this record feels like one long night,” frontman Kyle Durfey explains. “Out Of Sight” parallels that feeling musically via layered vocals, atmospheric instrumentation and percussion accents that sound like a crackling fire before the song carefully crescendos into a hypnotic blend of distorted bass and melodic guitar line that’s strangely satisfying and completely unexpected. But Pianos Become The Teeth have never been the type of act to follow conventions. The Baltimore, D.C., five-piece—which also features guitarists Mike York and Chad McDonald, bassist Zac Sewell and drummer David Haik—originally started out as a screamo band and gained an enthusiastic fanbase via 2009’s Old Pride and 2011’s The Lack Long After. However shortly afterward Durfey stopped screaming and the band transitioned into a post-rock act who expanded their sound on 2014’s Keep You and 2018’s Wait For Love. Drift is the culmination of the band’s penchant for redefining and transcending their sound and it does so in a way that stays true to their artistic and aesthetic vision.
