For what should be a relatively middle-of-the-road country act, Josh O’Keefe is strangely compelling to listen to. There’s something special going on under that slightly nasal but distinctive drawl, and his world-weary vocals are surprising, given his age.
He sounds like a man of the world, who’s been around the block a bit and the only thing left to do is to pick up a guitar, put pen to paper and sing about it.
Back in 2012 he dropped out of college and headed across the Atlantic to trace the footsteps of his idols (Johnny Cash) around Nashville. He became a regular on the local scene and recorded his debut album over the course of a couple of nights in a log cabin out in Tennessee.
His sound is primarily country/Americana with a side of folk and a hint of indie thrown in. He’s a strong storyteller and his songs are both political and personal. Seems O’Keefe has the potential to be something of a social commentator.
He’s currently on tour around the UK and then back to the States. And this gig at the Chapel will be a great opportunity to see him up close and personal.
