SATURDAY 18th of November

SASQUATCH supported by Blind River / at Black Heart

Sasquatch is a rock band from Los Angeles, CA. They tend to sip on influences from 70’s metal, rock, and psychedelia. Their songwriting approach is clear-cut; keep the focus on the hook.

The band was born in Philadelphia in 2000 and moved to Los Angeles in 2001 after Keith Gibbs (guitar, vox) joined up with Detroit natives Rick Ferrante (drums) and Clayton Charles (bass). Upon Clayton’s departure in 2007, the guys recruited Chicagoan Jason Casanova (Behold! The Monolith, Tummler) to join the fold. We arrive at 2017 and Dr. Craig Riggs (Roadsaw, Kind, Antler) is now shellacking the kit when he’s not brewing coffee or watching the Red Sox.

The band’s latest album, Maneuvers, was released on June 20th, 2017 and features the work of new basher, Craig Riggs, behind the kit. This is the band’s most concise work to-date. Extended jams were stripped down to the meat and potatoes. Short and sweet is the path looking forward. Andrew Schneider (NYC) returns behind the boards this round. You may recognize the name as he also provided the mixes on “II”. What fans hear is arguably the gents most mature and inspired song-set released, chunked with both heartwarmingly familiar moments – but all of it heavy on the heavy, as they say…always. Unprecedented attention was also devoted to spinning new yarns out of those evergreen rock and roll stories about love lost, hate found, relationships built and lives trashed, homes wrecked, etc. Look for the band to be gearing up for extended US dates in the Summer of 2018 and its next European tour in the fall of 2018. All’s fair in Love and Doom.

Tickets: £14.00 here

NOAH KAHAN / at O2 KENTISH TOWN

Over the past year, Vermont singer & songwriter Noah Kahan has exploded from his New England roots into the global mainstream and has been touted as one of 2023’s biggest and best new artists. At the core of his music are vulnerable lyrics and an unfiltered yet relatable honesty, as the critically acclaimed artist pens songs straight from the heart and cracks jokes with his signature, self-deprecating sense of humor. Across his three albums and an EP, Kahan has garnered global renown for his singular mix of Folk and Americana, landing more than two billion streams, a Platinum Certification for his hit single “Stick Season,” and collaborations with the likes of Post Malone, Lizzy McAlpine, Joy Oladokun, and GRAMMY-nominated artists Julia Michaels and Wesley Schulz of The Lumineers. His widely adored, Gold-Certified album, Stick Season, is inspired by his New England roots and earliest musical inspirations—from Paul Simon to Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens)—conveying a vivid representation of what he loves, fears, and struggles with most passionately. Noah has been on his sold-out “Stick Season Tour” across North America since the album’s release last year, selling half-a-million tickets to date and performing in the biggest venues of his career, with stadium and arena dates revealed for 2024. In June, he released an extended version of Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever), which has gone on to surpass sales of the original and shows no signs of slowing down.

Summer DeanSUMMER DEAN / at Black Heart

Summer Dean knows the value of unvarnished truth. How paths not taken can yield both happiness and heartache. How life doesn’t care about labels. That candor is palpable in every syllable and sound of the acclaimed singer-songwriter’s new record,The Biggest Life, a profound, vivid document of a songwriter cementing her place among the top rank of Texas tunesmiths.
“I’m very proud of myself and this record,” Dean says. “It’s the most real and vulnerable I’ve ever been with my writing.”
In a moment where so much of country music is safe, slick and simple, there is indeed a rawness and a reality to Dean’s songs which sets her apart as a songwriter of substance. It’s no wonder Texas legends like Bruce Robison, who agreed to produce Life on the strength of Dean’s demos, call her work “bracing.”
You can hear hard-earned humanity in “Big Ol Truck,” a wry ode to reality not always matching expectations, just as you can hear it in the woozy cantina swirl of “She’s in His Arms, But I’m in the Palm of His Hand,” and particularly in the album’s shattering closer, “Lonely Girl’s Lament,” Dean’s most formidable moment on record to date.
“It’s a human story she’s telling,” Robison says. “She’s showcasing life from her perspective. There are things in Summer’s songs that can resonate with people, even if they’ve never lived anything she’s talking about.”
For her part, Dean says Robison’s stamp of approval was “incredibly validating.” “His credentials and record as a writer gave me the confidence I needed to make this kind of album — completely analog, unfiltered and organic,” she says.
Dean has been steadily gaining momentum since the release of her break-out 2021 LPBad Romantic. Critics hailedRomantic, with Texas Monthly saying Dean showed “deft skill at disarming listeners with her vulnerability,” while the Boot said Dean “spins vibrant tales of her blue-collar life, turning life’s ordinary moments into extraordinary ones.” Dean was also just named the 2023 Ameripolitan Honky Tonk Female of the Year, and has performed with an array of country aces, including Colter Wall, Marty Stuart, Asleep at the Wheel, Hayes Carll, Mike and the Moonpies and Charley Crockett.
Dean’s devotion to honesty in the making of The Biggest Life extended to its creation, with these 13 songs being recorded completely analog at the Bunker, Robison’s Lockhart studio, with a hand-picked band of collaborators. It’s a fitting approach for music that leaves nowhere to hide and spares no detail.
Embracing an approach which made every studio take a high wire act suited Dean’s sensibility for this new material: “It made me let go of perfection,” she says. “I think when any artist does that, they do their best.”
That’s precisely what Summer Dean gives you on The Biggest Life: A handmade album, teeming with unadorned, universal truths, written and performed by a consequential artist whose singular perspective on the world may just profoundly alter yours. Get Tickets here £17.25

FRIDAY 24th of November

CMDN presents: Tizane, A Void, Ace Persona and Archy & the Astronauts / at Camden Club

Discover live music you NEED to hear! Join us for our last November gig of the year for the finest indie rock! Tizane – ‘Forever is Nothing’ has arrived. Full of angst-ridden anthems, all ten songs serve up a beguiling brew of lyrical lament and gut-wrenching guitar, cooked up for brave hearts and big stages. Heavy Magazine said this – ‘You can almost feel the venom simmering just below the surface, and it sounds like this band has a bit of anger and angst to let loose on the world’. izane have been together for about a year and were an immediate good fit both artistically and emotionally. No surprise then that their music should sound so authentic and free flowing. Music and Television critic, Garry Bushell wrote in the Daily Mirror: ‘People compare lead singer, Tizane with Phoebe Bridgers but actually the group’s music is much bolder and rockier! They wrong foot you with gentle intros that grow into huge festival anthems.’ Garry is not alone in heaping plaudits on the band, and has recently been joined by Classic Rock Magazine, Planet Rock and even The Beeb. Band members are Tizane on guitar and vocals, Charlie Harris on lead guitar, Greg Titmarsh on drums and Nathan Gordon on bass. A Void – what in the fourchette genou are you doing here?? I bet you can already feel your limbs waving around in an onche onche ondulé motion, this is only the start. In about 15 minutes, you’ll get a tingling sensation in your nostrils and oysters will start slipping out your eye sockets, before a 17 feet long iguana gets released from a less pleasant orifice. you’re welcome. Ace Persona – “Innovative interpretation of rock in a relatable context. Down to earth lyrics and infections grooves.” Ace Persona, a band with their roots in Camden (London), are a four-piece Alternative Rock band influenced by artists such as: Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, and Arctic Monkeys. In addition to these, other artists make their way into the band’s sounds, ranging from Amy Winehouse to A Tribe Called Quest. Founded in their university, these four are fueled by their love of music and passion to push the boundaries of rock with their unique sound. With their sophomore single “Time Goes Back Around”, which was released on the 28th of July, and live shows ready to play, this band is one you need to watch… Archy & the Astronauts – Archy & the Astronauts use gritty, hard hitting riffs with driving walls of sound to grasp their audiences with energy and tenacity. The band has gathered influences from across all genres of music, executing their sonic vision with witty lyricism and catchy hooks. With unmatched drive and on-stage prowess, these up-and-comers bring a fresh and youthful exuberance to modern rock. Since forming in 2021, the band has gone from hometown shows to festivals up and down the country, as well as venturing to the US. Debuting at Latitude Festival, the fiery 3 piece continued to grow, securing shows in New York City in June 2022. With continued support from BBC Introducing, the band has set out to release a slew of singles, surprising fans with their diverse yet grounded sound. With a live set that baffles, and a body of work that continues to grow, 2023 really does look to be out of this world…
