FRIDAY 04-08

  • AfroDiziac at Slim Jims – Rock
    Recommended by: Nila
I know, not directly in Camden, but close enough and AfroDiziac is too good to be missed!
Born to Brazilian immigrants in Halifax, Nova Scotia, AfroDiziac is no stranger to the label of “The Outsider”. Without a sense of home, always moving from place to place and never fitting in, cultural clashing began to brew what would become the beginning of an underdog’s tale. Taught from the struggles of being in a working class family of immigrants instilled the “no fear”policy when daring to dream…and dream big. Work hard, but work smart. Maxims that roared loudly in the household of the budding artist, not yet having found his creative outlet. Music. Music was always present in his upbringing. Exposed by his Mother and Father to the cultural music of the Brazilian martial art, “Capoeira” and the syncopated sounds of Samba, fortified AfroDiziac’s influential bond with his Brazilian roots. Upon receiving his first guitar at the age of thirteen, AfroDiziac soon fell in line with a musically led lifestyle. Engulfed by youthful aspirations, he quickly sought out a breeding ground of musical fermentation within New York City and began performing and leading his band at the age of fifteen; then called “The Electric Mojo Machine”. Enriched by experiences gained in New York, AfroDiziac sought a new perspective touching UK soil, arriving in London driven and determined to further develop, what he calls a, “Sonic Fingerprint”. Always drawn to an explosive, high-energy sound, it was no surprise that Rock n’ Roll proved to be a prevailing outlet of creativity. Inspired, in part, by the capricious wailings, eccentric kings of Chicago Blues maintained, a burning passion for strong grooves and the ever mystifying Legends of Rock’s yesteryears; A darker, more intuitive sound began to shape a voice that would later become “AfroDiziac”. / Tickets free  / Check them out on Instagram!

SUNDAY 06-08

  • BLUE KIMONO + NOT SOUP + MAMBOWAMBO at Fiddler’s Elbow – Blues, Rock’n’Roll
    Recommended by: Nila
I have seen this band before and absolutely enjoyed their live performance, highly recommended if you enjoy 60s inspired Blues Rock!Blue Kimono is a blues rock band based in London, UK, inspired by the music of the 60s British blues scene. Let’s meet the team: Shuko Fujita (vocals) comes from Japan, the land of the rising sun. This is appropriate as her voice is like a ray of sun, lighting up any room with its warm vibrato. This would be a good achievement for a trained, experienced singer but for a comparative novice who is deaf in one ear it is nothing short of miraculous and a testament to her natural talent and pluck. Shuko’s early exposure to music came in the form of family karaoke nights featuring Japanese pop music from the enka and kayoukyoku genres and traditional Okinawan folk music, featuring the shamisen, a type of three stringed guitar. Since moving to London, she has also moved on to blues music and in a short space of time, has become a regular fixture on the jam scene there. You may, or may not, like the nationalistic music of Jean Sibelius but when it comes to rock’n’roll, Aristo Doukas (guitar and vocals) is your Finn of choice! Initially inspired to pick up the guitar by a pretty girl (I can’t think of a better reason), his first influence was Albert King. As well as blues, Aristo has played many other styles over the years, including dance, rock and even hardcore punk, be they covers or originals. He is what’s known in guitar circles as a “Strat man” and the sounds he can conjure from his pedal board have to be heard to be believed!

“Broonsallroond” is a phrase you might hear if you visited a pub in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne but with Woodie Grooves (bass and vocals), our resident Geordie, bloosallroond might be more appropriate! As a multi-instrumentalist, playing both guitar and bass, he has a range of influences including Jimi Hendrix, Jack Bruce and Andy Fraser, from which you will deduce that he is deeply immersed in 60s blues rock music. His taste ranges more widely, however and encompasses both classical and folk music. Indeed, the flamboyance of his playing is matched only by his dress sense!

“I blame it all on my old man, a trad jazz clarinettist!” So says Jerry Claydon (drums and vocals), who is an Essex Boy in name only. He studied music performance and theory at college, initially training on classical and jazz guitar before switching to drums and keyboard. His main influence is blues rock and he counts Ken Pustelnik (Groundhogs) among his drum heroes. As well as having played in a number of local bands over the years, Jerry is a regular jammer and occasional house drummer on the London blues scene where he has played with Jack Hutchinson, Aaron Keylock and others. Jerry plays Pearl drums and Paiste cymbals.

NOT SOUP. An eclectic, riff-driven 4 piece from Birmingham, UK. Serving up a blend of psychedelia and obscurity via subversive earworm hooks and mind-bending rhythms.

/ Tickets £10 / Check them out on Instagram!

MONDAY 07-08

  • Chris Fox at Green Note – Blues, Folk
    Recommended by: Nila

A relaxed Monday night with blues and folk live music!
Born and raised in Cambridgeshire, Chris Fox cut his teeth playing for pints in local drinking establishments along the river Great Ouse in 2014. Fast forward to an award-winning singer songwriter who has played a variety of stages from Dorset to The Western Isles, and from intimate 10-seater venues to a packed out set in the Den at Cambridge Folk Festival 2019. Marking rapid progress through the UK folk and roots scene with his songwriting, vocals and mastery of the loop pedal, he won the Lichfield Folk Festival song writing competition in 2019. Genre-defying and hard to pigeonhole, his perceptive lyrics reflect overlooked stories in everyday life. He underpins his lyrics with a variety of musical styles ranging the roots lexicon of folk, blues, country and Americana. / Tickets £11  / Check them out on Instagram!

TUESDAY 08-08

  • Sacred Reich at the Underworld – Thrash Metal
    Recommended by: Nila

After a chilled Monday night to reset and cure hangovers from the weekend – a heavier Tuesday live music night to get through the week!
An American thrash metal outfit with a penchant for pairing political lyrics, personal politics, and a satiric sense of humor with an uncompromising sonic attack, Sacred Reich helped lead the second wave of the thrash metal movement in the late 1980s alongside contemporaries like TestamentDeath AngelDestruction, and Dark Angel. Based out of Phoenix, Arizona, the band unleashed an onslaught of socially and politically conscious speed metal via crushing albums like Ignorance (1987), The American Way (1990), Independent (1993), and Heal (1996) before calling it quits in 2000. In early 2018, the band announced that they had inked a deal with Metal Blade, resulting in the release of their long-awaited fifth full-length effort, Awakening, in 2019. / Tickets £29.07  / Check them out on Instagram!

  • Exciter at the Underworld – Thrash Metal
    Recommended by: Nila
    MORE THRASH METAL!
Canadian Heavy Metal legends EXCITER are returning to Europe this Summer to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their classic debut album “Heavy Metal Maniac”. Widely regarded as one of the most influential albums of the genre, “Heavy Metal Maniac” set a benchmark for fast and furious metal that still resonates with fans worldwide. With its driving rhythms, scorching solos, and powerful vocals, “Heavy Metal Maniac” helped shape the sound of the emerging Heavy Metal scene and has inspired generations of musicians since its release in 1983. Dan Beehler, drummer and singer of EXCITER, says: “40 years later and the legacy of ‘Heavy Metal Maniac’ is as strong as ever. We can’t wait to play these classic songs and share in the celebration with our brothers and sisters across Europe with our biggest production yet.
