To explain her name, she said:

”One time in Peru I found one called ‘greentea seng’. I was super high and I swapped the S for a P and there we have it. Also green is my favourite colour. Trees are green. And weed is green.”

On her single “Downers” Greentea Peng says she lost her “powers”. She’s wrong. What she brings is attitude, matched with sick lyrics. If you’re after a bit of stoner music with heart, listen. 

The 25-year-old South Londoner describes herself as neo-soul. She tops that up with a sultry mix of R n B, jazz, soul and hip hop. Her influences are diverse, inc. the Talking Heads, The Clash, Sean Paul and The Prodigy.

She’s been listed as a break out artist by Giles Peterson and played gigs with Boiler Room, Roundhouse Rising and Latitude. She wrote her most recent record whilst living in Mexico, a place she credits as being key to her creativity, despite the fact that so many of her songs are rooted in London. This is probably what makes her sound so … her.

Her voice has been compared with Amy Winehouse. That soulful sound makes sense for an artist who is clearly so connected to the process of creating bangin’ tracks. She’s been open about her struggles with mental health and addiction and the spirituality in her songs reflect a sense of healing and power.

And she’s playing Dingwalls as a part of 6Music fest on the 6th at Dingwalls, as well as the Jazz Café on the 26th March.
